Jukai is a lay ordination ceremony in which a Zen practitioner vows to lead his or her life in accord with the sixteen Bodhisattva precepts, formally becoming Buddhist. Preparing for Jukai involves studying these precepts and preparing the rakusu, a bib-like version of the Buddha’s robes traditionally worn by those who have received the precepts.
On Saturday morning March 6 (following the regular morning sit), three members of our sangha will complete jukai: Paul Cavanaugh, Brendan O'Connor, and Phyllis Webster. Following their vows, each will be presented with the rakusu; a dharma name; and a lineage document.
The ceremony will take place outdoors in the large backyard garden of the zendo (3226 N. Martin Avenue in Tucson) with COVID distancing and protocols strictly maintained. Everyone -- sangha members, friends and family -- are invited to attend and share this meaningful step along the path. Mask-wearing is required; sun hats are suggested. You are welcome to come for zazen before (see separate listing) or just arrive prior to the ceremony at 10:45. Chairs will be available; feel free to bring a cushion or stool, if you prefer.
